Fencing

  1. Do you make custom size fence panels?
In general we do not make custom panels, however there is the rare exception if the quantity justifies. Please inquire within.

  2. How high can I build my fence?
You should check with your local city hall, but your will probably find that 6 feet is the maximum height allowed.

  3. Is it best to cement my posts in the ground? If so, how much cement should I use?
We have found it is best to cement the fence posts in the ground. It is important that you tamp the ground firmly as you are replacing the dirt and rocks in order to make the post as sound as possible. Normally we recommend one 55 lb bag of premixed cement per post hole.

  4. How deep should I set my fence posts in the ground?
In most cases setting a post 2 feet deep in the ground is sufficient.

  5. What is the difference between T&G Boards and S1S2E Boards?
T&G (Tongue and Groove) Boards fit into each other. S1S2E Boards, have flat edges and 'butt' up against one another.

Protecting Your Investment

  1. How do I protect my wood?
Staining your wood with a solid, semi-transparent or translucent stain will prolong the life of your cedar structures.

  2. When is it safe to stain?
The weather is usually the deciding factor with staining. With most stains the drier the wood the better, however there are some water born stains that can be applied when the wood is wet. It is best to check the product specifications before applying any stain.

  3. How often should I stain?
There are 3 basic types of stain. Solid, semi-transparent and translucent. The life of each type depends on the weather and the exposure (southern, northern). Generally speaking a solid stain will last approximately 5 -7 years. A semi-transparent stain 3 - 5 years. Translucent stain 1 - 2 years.

  4. How can I prevent my posts from rotting?
A good quality preservative will prevent rot. If the posts are being set 2 feet deep in the ground be sure to treat the bottom 3 feet of the post as rot always starts at ground level.

  5. Can I stain my pressure treated posts right away?
No. There is too much preservative pumped into the posts to allow any stain to penetrate into the wood. You should wait until the green color starts to fade until you stain.
