ROOFING

Home > Cedar Products > Roofing

Your home’s roof is your first line of defence against UV rays, rain, snow, hail, fire and other natural elements, making it one of the most important parts of residential structures. However, that makes it highly susceptible to damage and daily wear and tear. And over time, the constant and harsh exposure is bound to result in deterioration.

To ensure that your roof will provide sufficient and long-lasting protection to your home, you need to choose the right roofing materials. Asphalt, concrete, coated metal tiles and fibreglass composites have become popular over the years, but many homeowners still opt for wood. Nothing beats the warmth and natural beauty of wood, especially red cedar.

Like other roofing materials, you’ll find that cedar has its own pros and cons. But don’t worry, as you’ll soon discover, the benefits definitely outweigh the drawbacks.

The top, undisputed benefits of cedar? Western Red Cedar boasts a timeless natural beauty that adds a touch of elegance to any home or building. The bonus: This type of wood ages gracefully over the years.

Apart from red cedar’s aesthetic value, you’ll love how shakes and shingles made of red cedar can withstand decay, rotting, wind, impact, heavy rains, storms, snow and many other natural elements. That means it’s very cost-effective and durable. In fact, Western Red Cedar can last 10 years longer than asphalt and other popular roofing materials.

And because it’s energy efficient (it can provide better insulation than asphalt shingles!) and it’s the only renewable roofing material that you’ll find in the market today, red cedar has emerged as the leading choice among green homeowners who want to conserve the environment and, at the same time, cut down on cooling and heating costs.

The only drawback is the cost. Cedar roofing is more expensive than other materials. But with what it can offer you in return—aesthetic value, longevity, durability and practicality—it’s definitely worth the investment.

Plus, at Surrey Cedar, you’ll see that all of our Western Red Cedar roofing products exceed grading standards and reputed for having the finest quality in the industry. These products are listed below:

Surrey Cedar was built around the manufacturing of cedar hip and ridge caps. We have become well-known for our quality and are supplying this line throughout the world. Surrey Cedar’s ridge caps are widely used in Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia. We offer them in both 18” and 24” lengths, in all three grades.

Our cedar shingles are precision-cut to provide a uniform, smooth sawn finish. Shingles are available in 16″, 18″ and 24″ lengths. At 18″ they are labelled as Perfections, and at 24″ they are Royals. The general thickness is 3/8″, and the main applications are for roofing and siding. We also have a full selection of cedar shakes.

This high-quality cedar shake features a split face and a sawn back. Hand-split and re-sawn shakes are available in both 18″ and 24″ lengths. They also allow for a choice in thickness between 1/2″ Medium and 3/4″ Heavy. These shakes are popular on traditional, ranch and historical homes, as they are designed to blend with their rustic surroundings.

This cedar shake falls between a re-sawn shake and a cedar shingle. Although it is sawn on both sides, it is thicker and less precise than a cedar shingle. Taper-sawn shakes are available in both 18″ and 24″ lengths. In terms of thickness, you can choose between the standard 5/8″ and the often-requested 3/4″ Heavy. These shakes are commonly utilized in residential structures, as cedar’s natural beauty adds a uniquely warm touch to all homes.

Cedar soffit is used to connect a wall to an edge of a roof so that your room is protected from water overflow when it rains. This architectural feature can be done on the interior (called a bulkhead) or exterior of a roof. It is typically the underside of a part of an overhang, staircase, arch, etc.

Cedar fascia is another one of our roofing products.
